About This Tour
Most of Tokyo was rebuilt from scratch after WWII bombing and decades of redevelopment — but Yanaka largely escaped both, making it one of the only neighborhoods in the city where you can still feel what old Tokyo actually looked and felt like. This is shitamachi: the old downtown character of narrow lanes, wooden houses, and a slower pace that's nearly disappeared everywhere else. Your guide will lead you through Yanaka's quiet temple district — home to dozens of temples and one of Tokyo's oldest cemeteries, where shoguns, artists, and writers are buried among centuries-old trees. From there, you'll wind through residential backstreets known for their relaxed, cat-filled atmosphere (Yanaka has long been one of Tokyo's most cat-friendly neighborhoods), before ending at Yanaka Ginza — a traditional shopping street lined with small family-run shops selling senbei, pottery, and local crafts much as they have for generations. Along the way, you'll get the history behind why this particular pocket of Tokyo survived when so much around it didn't, what daily shitamachi life looked like, and how the neighborhood has managed to stay this way even as the rest of the city transformed. It's a quieter, slower side of Tokyo — ideal if you've already done the big-name spots and want to see what locals mean when they talk about "real" old Tokyo.
